Pokies barons to make $500 million (by Greg Kelton)
January 31, 2007 01:15am
South Australian gamblers are on track to lose more than $800 million on poker machines this financial year.
Anti-pokies campaigners warn losses could be as high as $1 billion within three years unless more steps are taken to combat problem gambling. The losses - an average of $4993 a machine - continue to mount despite reductions in the number of machines and venues in SA, and smoking bans in hotels and clubs. The figures do not include losses on gaming machines at the Sky City casino, which has more than 800 machines. Last year, the casino reported gaming revenue of $114 million, but did not detail how much of that came from poker machines.
The latest figures from the Office of the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner show that in the first six months of the 2006-07 financial year, gambler losses on poker machines topped $404 million. This compares with $384.4 million for the same period of the 2005-06 financial year. The State Government's tax take from the machines in the first six months of the financial year was $161.4 million and the Budget forecasts a full-year total of $307.5 million.
Poker machine venues - there are 576 compared with 597 at the same time in 2005-06 - have collected $242 million, up from $232.5 million for the same time the year before. Hotels and clubs are making an average annual profit of between $39,577 and $70,063 a machine.
Since the first full year of poker machine operations in 1994-95, losses have topped $6.5 billion, taxes have raised $2.4 billion and profits to venues have reached $3.9 billion. No Pokies MLC Nick Xenophon said the figures were "bad news for problem gamblers". "It shows that the only measure that is going to see a drop in gambling revenue will be smoking bans and the introduction of smartcards," he said.
Mr Xenophon said he would be introducing a Private Member's Bill for the use of smart cards - which would replace the use of coins - when Parliament resumed next week. Uniting Care Wesley communications manager Mark Henley said he was surprised the level of problem gambling continued to grow and the latest figures highlighted that the removal of 2200 poker machines was not enough. He said 3000 were supposed to be removed from circulation, with 800 to go to meet that target.
"It is not happening at what you would call breakneck speed," he said. He also supported the introduction of smart cards and called for the rate of play on machines to be slowed down because addicts could play 23 or 24 games a minute.
Gambling Minister Paul Caica said a responsible gambling working party, which involves concerned community groups, was considering harm minimisation strategies.
"The Independent Gambling Authority, which recommended the reduction in gaming machines to State Parliament, is due to report back to the Parliament early this year on the effectiveness of their strategy," he said.
RIGGED !
